Exams There will be three exams for this course; the dates are indicated on the syllabus.
Final Essay due December 14th!Extra Credit If you would like extra credit: First Opportunity: Please read the article "The Leaning Tower Straightens Up" by Richard Covington. (I have placed two copies on reserve at O'Leary Library.) Then write a clear summary of the main points of the article. Be sure to note the following: why does it lean? What have been some of the attempts through history to fix it? What is the current solution? Who was Benito Mussolini and when did he try to save the structure? Why don't they just straighten the tower and make it perfectly vertical? What point is the author making in the last two paragraphs--what is "hubris"? The paper is due Oct. 16 and should be about 2 pages (no longer than 3). Second Opportunity: Please visit the UML art gallery in McGauvran Student Union, First Floor. There is a new show there titled "Metes and Bounds" by artist Andrew Haines. Look at the works in the show and pick one to write about. Analyize the work as we have in class: how has the artist composed the work? How has he used light? What types of brushstrokes? What type of color? Most importantly, how does all this add up to the effect of the painting? What is its mood? Why did you pick it or like it? The gallery is open Monday through Thursday 11-4. The paper should be two pages, double spaced, typed and proofread. It is due Nov. 20.
